Members of the Special Collections' team are experienced in working with undergraduate and postgraduate students to help them to develop their ideas for research projects based on our collections.

We offer bookable one-to-one sessions with our specialists, to enable you to discuss your proposals and discover what resources are available to support your work. Our familiarity of working with students and the resulting feedback we have received from their lecturers has demonstrated the real benefit to them of using Special Collections' materials in their learning experience.

We also work with student groups who are interested in developing project ideas connected with their courses, in evolving and mounting exhibitions and undertaking voluntary work. Recent examples of this for 2008–2009 include:
  • working with a small group of students on the BA History, Heritage, Education programme to curate a small exhibition on Matthew Boulton which was displayed in the Main Library
  • working with a group of History of Art postgraduate students to curate an exhibition on Birmingham buildings which was mounted in the Barber Institute
  • assisting a group of 2nd year History students on a Group Research project on the Royal Navy and the Ethiopian crisis

If you would like to talk your ideas through with us to see how we can help you to develop them, and to book a one-to-one advice session with one of our specialists, please contact Jenny Childs in the first instance on telephone +44 (0) 121 414 5839 (internal 45839) or email special-collections@bham.ac.uk.
